Participatory Market Chain Approach
The Participatory Market Chain Approach (PMCA) is an emerging method used to develop pro-poor market chain innovations for specific agricultural products. Originally developed for potatoes in the Andean Highlands of South America, it was piloted in Uganda in 2005 for development of the orange flesh sweet potato and tomato markets. The PMCA identifies market chain breakdowns and subsequent innovations by bringing diverse stakeholders together in a facilitated process. All market chain actors - from farmers to processors to consumers - are facilitated through a series of workshops and meetings to build trust and engage in activities to develop technological and institutional innovations in the market chain.
